Cyclosporiasis is a diarrheal illness typically caused by a parasite. You can become infected by drinking water or eating food that is contaminated with the parasite.

The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) and the NYC Health Department are investigating an increase of cyclosporiasis in the state.

Symptoms include:

  • Watery diarrhea and frequent bowel movements
  • Loss of appetite and weight loss
  • Abdominal cramping and bloating
  • Nausea and prolonged fatigue
  • Vomiting, body aches, and low-grade fever

If you have these symptoms, see a doctor as soon as possible. Tell your doctor that you may have been exposed to cyclosporiasis.
