New York City street-level stores and businesses must comply with new storefront security grille (gate) regulations outlined in the City's code. A storefront security-grille or security gate allows for:
- 24-hour visibility into a store or business
- Greater visual access for security
- Brighter, safer, and more welcoming NYC
By July 1, 2026, all existing and new security gates in the City in buildings must comply with the NYC Local Law 75 of 2009 requirement where 70 percent of the area covered by the security gate must be visible from the sidewalk.
This applies to buildings with occupancies designated as:
- Occupancy Group B (Business)
- Occupancy Group M (Mercantile)
Buildings in Historic districts and those designated as Landmark are exempt.
Business owners can get more information from the Department of Buildings.
