Traffic lane separators are located on city streets to improve roadway safety and manage the flow of different types of roadway users.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) installs and maintains traffic lane separators, including:

  • Plastic flexible delineators which are used to protect on-street pedestrian zones and bike lanes on streets. They can be yellow or white.

  • Plastic bollards ("Quick Kurbs") look like an upside-down baseball bat.  They are attached to a rubber curb or plastic cone-like base with reflective coverings. These are used to separate traffic lanes and protect pedestrian zones, bikes, and contra-flow bus lanes.

  • Rubber speed bumps are installed on the roadway or at corners to slow vehicles down and help enforce safe driving. These can be found at left and right turns, indicating bike and bus lanes, roundabouts and curb extensions known as chicanes.
