The NYC Medical Debt Relief Program wipes out medical debt for low-income New Yorkers.

The City is partnering with RIP Medical Debt, a New York-based nonprofit, to run the program.

RIP Medical Debt:

  • Buys medical debt from health care providers and hospitals in New York City
  • Identifies who is eligible for relief
  • Notifies people whose debt has been erased

Over three years, the program is expected to wipe out over $2 billion in medical debt.

There is no application process for this program. If your debt has been relieved, you will get a letter from RIP Medical Debt notifying you.

Eligibility

You may receive medical debt relief through this program if you:

  • Have an annual household income at or below 400% of the Federal Poverty Line, or
  • Have medical debt equal to 5% or more of your annual household income
