You can help taxpayers prepare their taxes and claim tax credits as an NYC Free Tax Prep volunteer.

No prior experience is necessary to sign up.

You can volunteer to:

  • Prepare tax returns
  • Greet and perform intake
  • Provide language interpretation

If you volunteer to be a tax preparer, you will be trained in:

  • Basic tax law
  • Electronic tax filing software

Tax preparers must:

  • Be comfortable working with people and working on a computer
  • Complete the IRS volunteer certification
  • Serve each week or every other week during tax season

If you are an enrolled agent and volunteer with the IRS VITA/TCE program through NYC Free Tax Prep, you can earn IRS Continuing Education (CE) credits.

Attorneys and Certified Public Accountants may also qualify for CE credits.

This depends on their:

  • State licensing requirements
  • National Boards of Standards
