You can help taxpayers prepare their taxes and claim tax credits by volunteering in the NYC Free Tax Prep program.

No prior experience is necessary to sign up.

You can volunteer to:

  • Prepare tax returns
  • Greet and perform intake
  • Provide language interpretation

If you volunteer to be a tax preparer, you will receive training on basic tax law and how to complete basic tax returns using electronic filing software.

Tax preparers must:

  • Be comfortable working with people and working on a computer
  • Complete the IRS volunteer certification
  • Serve each week or every other week during tax season

Enrolled agents can earn IRS Continuing Education (CE) credits volunteering with the IRS VITA/TCE program through NYC Free Tax Prep.

Attorneys and Certified Public Accountants may also qualify for CE credits depending on their state licensing requirements or National Boards of Standards.
