Thursday, November 28 is Thanksgiving Day.

All government offices are closed, including:

  • Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)
  • City and State Courts
  • Social Security offices
  • Post offices

There will be no mail delivery.

Public schools and Department of Education (DOE) offices are also closed.

Alternate Side Parking (street cleaning) rules are suspended.

No stopping, no standing, and no parking regulations are also suspended, except where those regulations are in effect anytime or seven days a week.

You do not have to pay the parking meter.

All NYC public schools are closed on Thursday, November 28 and Friday, November 29 for Thanksgiving Recess.

P311 (Parent Support Hotline) and Family Welcome Centers, including enrollment centers, are also closed.

Parking in School Zones

Parking is allowed in school zones when school is in recess. However, specific schools may be open on holidays, and parking restrictions would remain in effect. You should contact specific schools to verify that they are in recess.

There is no trash, compost or recycling collection on Thursday, November 28.

  • If Thursday is your regular trash or compost collection day, place your items at the curb Thursday evening for collection starting Friday, November 29. 
  • If Thursday is your regular recycling collection day, hold on to your items and place recycling out at the curb on Wednesday, December 4 for collection on Thursday, December 5.

Please note that collection delays are common after holidays.

All CUNY colleges are closed from Thursday, November 28 through Sunday, December 1 for Thanksgiving Break.

Classes will resume on Monday, December 2.

The Staten Island Ferry runs on a holiday schedule with service provided every 30 minutes from 7 AM to midnight.

All branches of the City's Public Library systems are closed.
