If you're interested in creating a volunteer clean-up project in your neighborhood, you can borrow cleaning supplies and tools from the Department of Sanitation (DSNY).

DSNY lends brooms, shovels, and rakes to community groups and block associations for community clean-up projects. You must return the equipment when you are done using it. DSNY also provides volunteers with bags and gloves.

After the cleanup, DSNY will collect the bagged debris.

If you would like to organize a clean-up event, you must first submit a project plan to DSNY three weeks in advance.

The project plan must include:

  • Event location
  • Event date and rain date
  • Number of volunteers
  • Tools needed

Once your plan is complete, contact DSNY by email or by phone for further assistance.

If you're interested in volunteering for a community clean-up project, you can check DSNY Events Calendar for upcoming events.
