Saturday, July 4th is Independence Day. The holiday will also be observed on Friday, July 3rd.

On Friday, July 3rd, Independence Day (Observed):

  • Some government offices may be closed. Courts will be closed. Post offices will be open and there will be mail delivery.
  • Alternate Side Parking (street cleaning) rules are suspended. In addition:
    • You do not have to pay the parking meter.
    • No stopping, no standing, and no parking regulations are suspended, except where those regulations are in effect anytime or seven days a week.
  • NYC Public Schools are closed. The P311 (Parent Support Hotline) is also closed. There will be no summer meals service.
  • Trash, recycling, and compost collection is on schedule.
  • Staten Island Ferry service runs on a normal schedule.
  • Public Library branches in all five boroughs are closed Friday, July 3 through Sunday, July 5.

On Saturday, July 4th, Independence Day:

  • All government offices, including post offices, are closed. There will be no mail delivery.
  • Alternate Side Parking (street cleaning) rules are suspended. In addition:
    • You do not have to pay the parking meter.
    • No stopping, no standing, and no parking regulations are suspended, except where those regulations are in effect anytime or seven days a week.
  • NYC Public Schools are not in session, but there will be summer meals service.
  • Trash, recycling, and compost collection is suspended.
    • If Saturday is your regular trash, recycling, or compost collection day, place your items at the curb Saturday evening for collection beginning Sunday, July 5. 
    • Please note that collection delays are common after holidays.
  • Staten Island Ferry service will be suspended from 8 AM to 1:30 PM and from 8 PM to 10 PM. During operating hours, ferries will run every 30 minutes with 20-minute service between 4 PM and 8 PM.
  • Public Library branches in all five boroughs are closed Friday, July 3 through Sunday, July 5.
