A Sign Hanger License is required by the Department of Buildings (DOB) to:

DOB accepts complaints about licensed sign hangers.

Two types of licenses are issued: Master Sign Hanger and Special Sign Hanger.

A Master Sign Hanger License is required to:

Request a construction permit for sign hanging work OR
Perform sign hanging and attaching work in New York City. This requirement applies to all signs, regardless of size and weight.

A Special Sign Hanger License is required to:

Request a construction permit for sign hanging work OR
Perform sign hanging and attaching work in New York City. This applies to any sign on the outside of any building and any sign as large as 150 square feet face area or 1200 pounds.
