The NYC Food Standards are rules for City agencies that sell or serve food. They can also be adopted voluntarily by non-government agencies.

The Standards were developed based on scientific evidence and nutrition research.

The aim is to improve the health of all New Yorkers by lowering the risk of chronic disease through:

  • Increasing access to healthy foods
  • Improving dietary intake

The Standards address various settings where food is sold or served.

These include:

  • Meals and snacks
  • Vending machines
  • Meetings and events
  • Jails

Resources are available to implement the Standards for:

  • City agencies
  • Universities
  • Hospitals
  • Groups
  • Other institutions
