People with AIDS or HIV and their families can get assistance to find out if they are eligible for public assistance, SNAP (food stamps), employment and vocational services.

Information and referrals to community-based agencies are available through the HIV/AIDS Services Administration (HASA).

Housing assistance, including a list of landlords and brokers who have assisted HASA clients in finding housing, is also available. Contact the Human Resource Administration (HRA) to learn more.

The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) provides medical case management or care coordination services for people living with HIV/AIDS. If you enroll in Care Coordination, you will have a whole team providing support. A care coordinator will help you with your clinical needs and a navigator will help you in the community.

The team will help you:

  • Learn to live better with HIV/AIDS
  • Manage medical appointments
  • Manage your medications
  • Get access to housing, health insurance, and social services

Proof of your HIV/AIDS status is required.

The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) provides:

  • Assistance notifying your sex or needle sharing partner of HIV exposure
  • Help getting notified partners tested for HIV
  • Help connecting any HIV positive person to HIV medical providers
  • Information for preventing HIV transmission and staying healthy

The DOHMH also takes reports about individuals intentionally spreading HIV.

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene offers a free and confidential texting service for people who have HIV.

You can meet other people living with HIV and learn how to improve your health. The Positive Life Workshop is a peer-led series for HIV-positive people, especially those who have been recently diagnosed.

The workshop teaches you about healthy living, how to stick with your medications, and how to advocate for your interests with medical providers.
