Green Carts are food carts and trucks that sell fresh fruits, vegetables, and other healthy foods in New York City neighborhoods with limited access to fresh produce.

Green Carts can also sell:

  • Plain nuts
  • Bottled drinking water
  • Unsliced raw fruits and vegetables such as whole carrots, bananas, apples, and berries
  • Pre-packaged sliced fruits and vegetables (if the vendor has equipment to keep food cold)

Green Cart operators must have a Green Cart Permit from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH).

To apply for a Green Cart Permit, you must first apply for the waiting list. The waiting list for Manhattan and Queens is currently closed. You can apply for the waiting list for the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Staten Island at any time.

If you are currently on a waiting list, you will be offered a permit as it becomes available.
