Automated Meter Reading (AMR) Upgrade 2024-2027

Starting in December 2024, DEP will be working to upgrade Automated Meter Reading (AMR) devices across all five boroughs.

This upgrade is:

  • Free
  • Mandatory
  • To replace devices that have reached the end of their useful life

No appointment is necessary since most AMR devices are located outside the property.

Property owners will receive an email or a letter from DEP, notifying them when they expect technicians to be in the area. (If DEP does need access to your property to reach the AMR device, they will reach out to you separately.)

The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) installs devices for automated meter reading (AMR) of water meters throughout New York City. The devices automatically transmit water meter readings directly to DEP for more accurate billing, and will assist in ending the need for estimated bills.

If you're not home when the contractor or inspector visits, you will find a notice with instructions for scheduling a future installation. If your home hasn't been visited, you can schedule an appointment for an installation.

DEP contractors going door-to-door to provide free installation of AMR devices are in uniform and must carry and show photo I.D. cards and badges.
