You can get information on sidewalk cleaning enforcement times. Policies differ for residential, commercial, and mixed-use properties.

Residential property owners must clean the sidewalks adjoining their property and 18 inches from the curb into the street.

Sanitation agents can only issue violations for dirty sidewalks from 8 AM to 9 AM and from 6 PM to 7 PM, 7 days a week.

Commercial property owners must clean the sidewalks adjoining their property and 18 inches from the curb into the street.

Enforcement times are limited to two 1-hour periods per day and vary according to which Sanitation section the address is located in.

Most businesses normally closed on Saturdays or Sundays are exempt from enforcement on those days. Any businesses closed for an extended period must make arrangements to have the area maintained. Storefronts that are part of a large residential building may be subject to residential enforcement routing rules.

Commercial Enforcement Routing Stickers

The Department of Sanitation (DSNY) no longer provides stickers to businesses stating the daily enforcement routing times. If you need proof of your routing times, you can look up your address on the DSNY website and print the screen.

Enforcement times may differ for properties used for both commercial and residential purposes.

You can get information specific to mixed-use properties.
