  • Hate Crime to report posters or offensive displays that can be considered a hate crime

You can report illegal postings (such as decals, flyers, posters, and stickers) on public and City-owned property, including:

  • Bus stop shelters
  • Fire hydrants
  • Litter baskets
  • Mailboxes
  • Public buildings
  • Street lights
  • Trees
  • Utility poles

What You Can’t Report

The Department of Sanitation (DSNY) does not take complaints about postings that are:

  • Attached to private buildings
  • On scaffolding, wood or metal construction fencing, sheds, or barricades
  • Put up by government agencies or Community Boards
  • Announcing street closures or no parking for filming

DSNY will not remove postings from private property. Removal is the sole responsibility of the property owner or manager.

What You Need

Your complaint must include:

  • The name, address, and phone number on the posting
  • The exact location of the posting

What Happens Next

If the illegal postings are on public or City-owned property and are accessible, DSNY will remove them. If the agency can identify and find who is responsible, they may give them a violation.
