You must have a Newsstand License to run a stand or booth on a public sidewalk that is not readily removable to sell newspapers and magazines. You cannot hold a license for more than two newsstands at a given time, and the City will not process more than two applications from a single applicant at any given time.

The City will submit a copy of your application to the relevant Community Board for comment. Your application must be approved by the Department of Transportation, Landmarks Preservation Commission (if applicable), and Design Commission.

Fee

The license fee for two years is $1,076, including a processing fee of $269.

Expiration Date

The license expires March 31 or September 30 in even-numbered years.

About three months before your license expires, the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) will mail you a renewal package.

Once your license expires, you are considered unlicensed. You may get penalties if you continue to operate. If you don’t renew within 59 days of expiration, you will have to reapply.

Renew Online

To renew online, you need to have a DCWP online account and a Personal Identification Number (PIN). The PIN is required to link information about your DCWP records to your online account.
